In this guide
The skin of the lips is thin and loses moisture quickly, especially in cold, wind and sun. A gentle scrub can remove dry flakes from lips that are only rough, but cracked or bleeding lips need soothing first. For dry lips, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends lip balm, sun protection and avoiding irritating products.
A simple two-ingredient scrub
- Mix half a teaspoon of fine sugar with a few drops of a food oil, such as olive or almond oil.
- Apply to the lips and massage very gently in small circles for about 30 seconds.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and immediately apply lip balm or a thin layer of petroleum jelly.
- Use the scrub no more than once a week, and skip it if your lips sting or are cracked.
Do not add ready-made cosmetic products, gel from an aloe leaf or essential oils to the scrub. Mixing changes their composition and shelf life, and fragrances and flavourings can irritate the lips.
Everyday lip care
- Apply lip balm several times a day and before bed, and use a thicker layer of petroleum jelly for very dry lips.
- Outdoors, use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher and reapply it about every two hours.
- Drink enough water, and use a humidifier in the bedroom if needed.
- Do not lick, bite or pick your lips.
- While your lips are chapped, avoid products with menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, fragrance and flavourings.
When to see a dermatologist
If your lips do not improve after two to three weeks of good care, see a dermatologist. The cause may be an allergic reaction, a yeast infection or a change that needs examining. According to the AAD, do not exfoliate open wounds or sunburned skin.

Common questions
Can I add aloe gel to the scrub?
There is no need. Do not mix ready-made cosmetic products into homemade recipes, because it changes their composition and shelf life. Sugar and a few drops of food oil are enough.
How often should I scrub my lips?
No more than once a week, and only when your lips are not cracked or sore. Regular lip balm during the day matters more.
Before first use
