Lactase breaks down lactose, the milk sugar. When activity is low, a certain amount of dairy food can cause gas, pain or diarrhoea. Other conditions share these symptoms, so one uncomfortable coffee is not a definite diagnosis.
Find a tolerated alternative
Some people tolerate a smaller serving with a meal, mature cheese or yoghurt, while others prefer lactose free products. With plant drinks, check fortification and protein. Lactose free milk still contains milk proteins and is not a solution for milk protein allergy.
Lactase enzyme can help with particular meals according to its instructions, but probiotics or aloe do not automatically replace the missing enzyme. Arrange professional advice before changing a child’s diet.
Review nutritional intake
Forever Calcium can be compared only if assessment finds insufficient dietary calcium. It does not break down lactose, and allergy suitability still requires label checking. Blood in stool, weight loss or persistent symptoms without lactose calls for assessment rather than more supplements.
Before shopping, compare two drinks per equivalent amount for calcium, protein and added sugars. Check whether a plant alternative is fortified and needs shaking as directed. If avoiding dairy because allergy is suspected, do not reintroduce it simply to test lactose tolerance at home. The reason for avoidance determines the safety of a trial and should be clarified before changing your menu.
